FAQS & HOW TO...

Why is my internet speed slow? There are many reasons for slow internet speed on both wired and WiFi connections. At Home Network Specialists, we offer a free Network & WiFi Survey to identify the cause and provide detailed recommendations. Here are a few steps you can take to help identify the cause: 1. **Poor Coverage:** Is your WiFi signal being blocked or degraded due to distance from the router or multiple walls and doors? Try moving the device closer to the router. 2. **Multiple Neighbouring WiFi Networks:** Performance issues can arise from multiple neighbouring WiFi networks. Check your device's WiFi settings to see if there are many other networks with strong signals. We can optimize your home WiFi network to utilize the best bandwidth and improve signal strength. 3. **Overstrain on Your WiFi:** Multiple devices competing for bandwidth can cause stuttering and lower speeds. Hardwire devices that are heavy data users, such as media streaming devices or TVs. 4. **Using the Broadband Provider's Default Router/WiFi:** Routers provided by broadband providers often can't handle today's demanding network requirements. Providers may offer "extenders" or "repeaters" to cover areas with poor signal, but these are often insufficient. We can perform a WiFi & Network Survey and provide bespoke recommendations for your situation.

Should I hardwire my devices? There are many benefits to hardwiring certain devices, although it can be more challenging due to the need for a direct Ethernet cable running from the router to the device. Consider the following when deciding if you should hardwire your device: 1. **Device Mobility:** Is the device mobile (e.g., tablet or mobile) or static (e.g., TV or desktop computer)? If static, hardwiring will relieve strain on your WiFi network and provide more reliable connectivity. 2. **Usage Type:** Will the device be used for video or media streaming (HD/4K/8K)? If so, hardwiring is highly recommended to prevent bandwidth issues and ensure smooth streaming. 3. **Work Purposes:** Devices used for work should ideally be hardwired to ensure stable connectivity and avoid disruptions caused by other devices on the network. 4. **Network Load:** If more than three people are using the WiFi network with multiple devices, hardwiring some devices can help alleviate network strain. 5. **Connection Type:** Devices connected via 2.4GHz may struggle with media streaming if multiple devices use the same band. Hardwiring or using 5GHz WiFi 6/6e can improve performance.
